VDICSS in the Community

We are proud to be involved in our community and partner with other organizations to bring about positive change. Check out our initiatives below to see how we are helping newcomers thrive and strengthening our community through cultural events and awareness campaigns.

This four-part workshop series led by renowned syilx artist Mariel Belanger encourages newcomers to delve into the concepts of "home" and belonging through the lens of Indigenous worldviews.

The Embrace the Nations events provide a unique opportunity for the Vernon community to engage and learn about cultures from around the world, offering attendees a taste of their traditions and culture.

The goal of this initiative was to advance reconciliation through learning with a fun, interactive, and educational community experience, and to inspire individuals on their personal journeys toward Truth and Reconciliation.

Reflections on Belonging invites communities to delve into today’s most pressing societal issues. Featuring powerful storytelling, immersive art, and interactive experiences, this exhibition offers more than just an opportunity to observe—it invites active participation.

North Okanagan residents participated in arts-centered workshops, funded by the Government of Canada, to share their stories of discrimination and oppression. This publication showcases their resilience and calls for action against systemic injustice.

We partnered with the Literacy Society of the North Okanagan to create a book of art made by children in our community. At the creative sessions, children ages 4 to 12 were asked two questions: “who are you in your community?” and “who are the children in your community?”. They expressed their answers through art.

In an effort to spread awareness of COVID-19 vaccines, we interviewed newcomers to share their stories of how the pandemic has affected them and how far we've come since 2020.
