Exhibition Content

The exhibition is structured around three main themes: Understanding Privilege, Consequences of Assimilation, and Disrupting the Status Quo.

Understanding Privilege

Visitors will explore how societal norms and structures confer advantages to certain groups, which is often unnoticed or taken for granted. An interactive installation will prompt reflection on personal privilege and its implications.

Consequences of Assimilation

Highlighting the impact of assimilation on cultural diversity and innovation, this theme showcases personal stories conveyed through photographs and quotes. Artworks from diverse perspectives illustrate the richness of authentic identities and the challenges of assimilation.

Disrupting the Status Quo

This theme encourages action and responsibility while emphasizing the importance of both individual and collective efforts in challenging societal norms. A locally-produced short film and partnered activity on advocacy prompts visitors to consider the power of small-scale actions in driving systemic change.

Reflections on Belonging invites communities to delve into today’s most pressing societal issues. Featuring powerful storytelling, immersive art, and interactive experiences, this exhibition offers more than just an opportunity to observe—it encourages active participation. Visitors will explore the profound interconnected aspects of our shared experience and be moved to self-reflection and inspired to create a collective vision for a just and equitable future.

The exhibition was developed by Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society, with support from the Government of Canada's Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program. We are thankful to the many individuals who shared their personal stories, which are at the heart of this project. To learn more about the Belonging project, please click here.
